Hundreds of Oranga Tamariki staff

complete weeks-long cultural training

Oranga Tamariki says it is in talks with a collective of wānanga after hundreds of ministry staff successfully completed a Māori-focused cultural capability training programme.

The programme, called Tū Māia, was delivered by wānanga (learning institutions) and forms part of the wider Oranga Tamariki Te Hāpai Ō strategy designed to improve outcomes for tamariki and their whānau.

It was established by Tā Wira Gardiner during his time as Secretary for Children and Oranga Tamariki chief executive.

Te Atarangi Whiu, the director of Te Hāpai Ō Cultural Programmes at Oranga Tamariki, said three wānanga were involved in the delivery, Te Wānanga o Raukawa, Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi and Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.
