Great Minds:

Mental health as a topic of discussion has come leaps and bounds over the past decade. As public discussion has opened up, many people have also developed a range of mental health tools to deal with the reality of our day-to-day lives. As wonderful as mental health initiatives are - not to mention the feel-good factor that we all get from giving a platform to these issues - there remains fear and misunderstanding on multiple fronts, and nowhere more imposing than in the workplace.Say I'm experien...

REFLECTIONS

When I moved to Turanganui-a-Kiwa to live with my partner, he was working as an archaeologist with a range of iwi. This allowed me to follow him into a world I knew little about. We were on the beach at Whareongaonga the day he and the mana whenua moved some kōiwi back from the eroding coastal urupā. We were wrapped in Ringatū karakia from before dawn and until after the ceremony. It was safe and beautiful, and I was beyond humbled to stand there behind the whānau.Link to article: ...

Wāhine Māori police graduates

Out of 70 constables who graduated in Wing 355 on Thursday, 24 are wāhine Māori - a record number. In 2017 there were only 22 out of the entire year's 496 graduates.Commissioner Andrew Coster called it a good sign but he recognised there was still a way to go."It's fundamentally important that when New Zealanders look at their police service they can see themselves in it," Coster said."We deal with really diverse communities with really diverse problems and the best way for us to properly under...

Oranga Tamariki Oversight Bill

OPINION: I have heard Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern say time and again that she wants Aotearoa New Zealand to be the best place in the world for our tamariki to grow up. I want that too – especially for those who are in state care.I am a survivor of abuse in state care with 12 years of lived experience under an oppressive, traumatising, and isolating “care” and “protection” system. I, and the community I represent, am deeply disheartened by the way the Oranga Tamariki Oversight Bi...

Some principals unimpressed

James Cook High School principal Grant McMillan said he hoped the Qualifications Authority would change the tests because the initial feedback indicated they were too difficult."If what we have in front of us right now is what is actually introduced in the future, they will be too hard both in terms of the design of the assessment, the level some of it is pitched at, the fact that you need to spend so much time in words when you're supposed to be working in mathematics, and some of the mechanica...

Honouring the mauri

How do we protect and enhance the mauri within an urban environment? Simply put, mauri is energy. It is often paired with the word ora meaning alive or in good health. Mauri ora is the state of being in good health and well balanced. Mauri is also the source of emotions.Matauranga Māori concepts are interconnected and relative to each other; they help us understand and connect to our place within the systems of the natural world. Mauri is essential for mana, power or authority to flow. Understa...

When your teen tells you something worrisome about a friend,

It can be startling, what parents of teens can overhear or otherwise learn about their own child’s friends — who's getting in with a misguided crowd, who's taken up a not-so-secret vaping habit, who seems depressed or even suicidal. And sometimes, the instinct to reach out to the parent with news that their teen might be in trouble can be a strong one — especially when your child comes directly to you with the information. But when is that helpful and important — and when is it...

The history of the Kīngitanga and

The Kīngitanga or Māori King movement is one of the most enduring Māori institutions that emerged in colonial times, and is one of the longest-running political institutions in New Zealand.
