New bilingual signs replace

te reo welcome to Nelson

Welcome signs that were installed for te wiki o te reo Māori (Māori Language Week) in 2020 have been replaced with new bilingual signs at the request of Nelson mayor Nick Smith.

The new signs, which say “Welcome to Nelson Haere mai ki Whakatū”, were installed on December 17 at a cost of $4795.25.

The old signs, which said “Haere mai ki Whakatū”, were installed in 2020 to help celebrate te wiki o te reo Māori, and were kept after receiving positive feedback from the community.

The signs are on State Highway 6 as you enter Nelson from Richmond and in Atawhai.
